My husband Andre and I live on a commercial organic fruit farm which we established 22 years ago in Lower Daintree. We have two sons, Asha (25) and Nick (21). I grew up in Melbourne, and graduated from Melbourne University, first working as a high school teacher, followed by senior management posi tions i n the Federal Departments of Health, Housing and Community Services and Aboriginal Education. In 1994 I established the first Community Services Department of Douglas Shire Council and was appointed acting CEO in 2007. I have been the elected Division 10 Councillor since March 2008. I have over 30 years of business, government and community experience. After almost 20 years in Local Government, I know I have the skills, knowledge and personal strength to take on the challenge of being Mayor. I am an experienced company director, both private and public and my academic qualifications include a Masters i n Business Administration. I have a number o f priorities, but top of my list is strong economic management and fiscal responsibility. I will deliver a fair, realistic and sustain- able budget and limit rate increases as far as possible. In the first two years I will review every single aspect of council’s operations and service delivery to ensure maximum effectiveness and best use of Council’s resources. I support our two key industries – tourism and agriculture and will explore and embrace investment of new diversification opportunities that promote appropriate and sustainable growth. I will develop a water strategy focused on security of supply.
Why are you running for Mayor?
