Douglas Theatre Arts Group receives Blockade writing grant
DOUGLAS Theatre Arts Group has received a grant in the latest round of the Regional Arts Development Fund.
The group will receive over $4500 so that playwright Jack Heywood can complete a script telling stories of the Dain- tree Blockade, one of the seminal occasions in the growth of the environmental movement in Australia.
The blockade occured 30 years ago when groups opposed the building of a road into the Daintree.
The Regional Arts Development Fund is a partnership between the Queensland Government and regional councils, with the latest round of grants supporting 11 projects across the Cairns region.
The Bloomfield Blockade is approaching its 30th anniversary at the end of November and various organisers in the district are working on plans for a reunion involving original participants in the campaign.
