Mossman rape charge
A 30- YEAR- OLD Mossman man has been remanded in jail without bail after allegedly violently attacking and raping a 30-year-old Mossman woman.
The incident occurred last Sunday when the woman was attacked in her home just after midday, after a violent struggle the woman sustained a severe laceration to her arm and bruising and swelling to her face.
She was transported to Mossman Hospital and later transferred to Cairns Base Hospital for surgery.
Police arrested the man around 3.30pm that day and charged him with two counts of burglary, two counts of assault with intent to rape, one count of unlawful wounding and one count of rape.
He was held in custody before appearing in the Cairns Magistrates Court On November 11, where he was remanded in custody to reappear in the Cairns Magistrate’s Court on January 29.
It is understood the man has priors and was out on parole at the time of the incident.
Detective Sergeant Trevor Perham said the offender was not known to the victim and it appeared to be a random opportunistic attack.
‘‘The level of violence demonstrated by the offender during this attack of great concern,’’ he said.
‘‘This incident demonstrates that even in relatively safe communities of Mossman and Port Douglas, we are not immune to infrequent acts of violence, it still pays to be security conscious and take common sense measures around your home.’’
