Min­is­ter hits road to iden­tify mo­bile re­cep­tion blackspots

FED­ERAL Min­is­ter for Com­mu­ni­ca­tions Paul Fletcher is trav­el­ling to the Far North next year to meet with res­i­dents suf­fer­ing from poor re­cep­tion for mo­bile cov­er­age, as part of the Coali­tion’s elec­tion an­nounce­ment that it would in­vest $100 mil­lion to en­sure that re­gional, re­mote and outer met­ro­pol­i­tan com­mu­ni­ties have ac­cess to more re­li­able and avail­able mo­bile phone ser- vice. The gov­ern­ment wants to en­sure the fund­ing is tar­geted to ar­eas is real need and are ask­ing for in­put from peo­ple deal­ing with poor re­cep­tion. It is hoped that the fund­ing cri­te­ria will be an­nounced early next year so that ap­pli­ca­tions can be as­sessed in 2014 and base sta­tions im­proved in 2015.
