SIMMERING away are two matters that seem set to run for a while yet and more heatedly than now – the cane haulage down the Rex Range road and the headcount issue for the new shire council administration.
For some people the cane truck issue is not really local because from the rail heads in Cassowary the cane will be taken off trucks and brought to the mill by rail. End of matter and too bad for all the folks higher up the hill putting up with the extra traffic.
But the people of Julatten and further up the range are in a fighting mood over an issue that goes to the heart of the amenity of the area.
As for the council staffing issue, there is genuine astonishment and anger in the community at the perceived unfairness of the situation in which Cairns Regional Council decides which staff and how many are transferred to the fledgling shire.
We can expect some serious pushback against this scenario soon.
The fighting outside the Full Moon Party and the jailing of a local for glassing in a pub stoush are unsettling matters and may point to other serious issues we need to confront, sooner or later.
