Bowls Club eyes Wonga Beach expansion

A SOCIAL club cum sports outlet could be on the cards for Wonga Beach, built by Mossman Bowls Club which is beginning to think about new projects following the opening of its new expanded clubhouse last Saturday.

Bowls Club secretary manager Kevin Rynne told the Gazette that the club was keen not to be ‘‘just sitting on its hands’’ now that the renovations in Mossman were finished.

‘‘We do want to do something for the community,’’ he said, adding that Wonga Beach was first considered as a possible location for a social/sport venue at the annual general meeting of the Mossman Bowls Club in 2012.

‘‘Wonga is a hot contender to my mind,’’ Mr Rynne said.

The coastal town lacks a social hub ever since the tavern was razed some years ago and there is an apparent need for a new venue. Mr Rynne thinks such a venue could also be something of a sports outlet, probably a bowls club with a quarter or half-sized green, or perhaps a social venue with a tennis court alongside.
