Haunt feels very much alive
THE Haunting of Oak Beach has grown from strength to strength with recognition as a finalist for the Best Tourist Attraction, Best Annual Event and an award winner of Best Live Entertainment at the Port Douglas Business Awards. ‘‘I still feel the award Best Live Entertainment Venue should be changed to Best Dead Entertainment Venue’’, said the Demonised Ghoul aka Richard Lavender. ‘‘Becoming a finalist as the Best Tourist Attraction has brought the Haunt to a whole new level. I remember last year when I announced that the Haunt one day would be considered a tourist attraction I was laughed at and further demonised. This Ghoul just smiled and knew that the naysayers would be proven wrong. The public demonstrated the credibility of the Haunt with their votes for best tourist attraction,’’ the Ghoul said proudly.
‘‘This year as well as last year we had visitors from the US, Canada, Japan and New Zealand. We even received requests from a family in Hawaii asking if they could be volunteers this year. Plus, this year we were approached by Peters Ice Cream to be a spon- sor of the Haunt. The request for sponsorship was turned down. But, this coming year we plan to accept sponsorship from interested companies desiring great responsive recognition for their products and services.’’
The Haunt started out as a local Halloween set up for the Oak Beach kids of the neigh- bourhood some four years ago. Each year the Haunt expanded and gained new interest, from visitors to council alike. Today everyone wants a piece. Some to control it. Some to enjoy it and some to participate in it. We’ll see what 2014 holds for the Haunting of Oak Beach. Discussions and plans have begun.
