Dou­glas li­brary with no in­ter­net

AF­TER around six-weeks without in­ter­net, Dou­glas Shire res­i­dents re­liant on the in­ter­net at the Moss­man Li­brary will have to re­main pa­tient.

Gen­eral Man­ager Cor­po­rate Ser­vices Dar­ryl Crees said as part of the de-amal­ga­ma­tion, a new com­puter net­work was es­tab­lished to fa­cil­i­tate all of the new Dou­glas Shire Coun­cil op­er­a­tions.

‘‘ To en­sure the se­cu­rity of Coun­cil’s op­er­a­tions, the com­put­ers lo­cated at the Moss­man Li­brary and Port Dou­glas Kiosk for util­i­sa­tion by the pub­lic can not be con­nected to the net­work un­til an iso­lated en­vi­ron­ment is cre­ated,’’ he said.

‘‘We ap­pre­ci­ate the im­por­tance of com­puter ac­cess to the li­brary users how­ever Coun­cil’s In­for­ma­tion Tech­nol­ogy re­sources have had to fo­cus on busi­ness crit­i­cal sys­tems. In ad­di­tion, is­sues have de­vel­oped cre­at­ing the cus­tom con­fig­u­ra­tion for these com­put­ers and in­stalling rel­e­vant soft­ware. Coun­cil has been work­ing with its ven­dors and it is an­tic­i­pated so­lu­tions maybe avail­able to­wards the end of next week.’’
