Douglas shows off

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS -

THE promotional campaign for Port Douglas Carnivale 2014 is underway with Tourism Port Douglas and Daintree hosting five VIP journalists from across Australia at the weekend.

Kurt Bayer of the New Zealand Herald, the country’s national newspaper with a readership of around 600,000 people, said it was a privilege to visit Port Douglas and Daintree, and to sample just some of the remarkable experiences on offer.

‘‘To snorkel the Great Barrier Reef and swim alongside turtles and colourful fish one day, and to visit the ancient Daintree rainforest the next, is truly incredible.

‘‘To savour those days over wonderful, fresh and high-class local food washed down by fine wines and beers, makes it as close to a tropical paradise as one could imagine.’’

Over three days, the journalists, which included representatives from the Financial Review, news.com.au, the Townsville Bulletin and online blog sites, were given a taste of Port Douglas Carnivale’s emerald 20th year with visits to the Daintree Eco Lodge, the Low Isles with Aquarius and Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures.

They were also given a preview of some of Carnivale’s most popular events including the Zinc Chandon Lunch, and Taste of Paradise thanks to Harrisons Port Douglas.

Port Douglas Carnivale general manager Roy Weavers said the familiarisation forms part of the overall marketing campaign, and is an initiative of Tourism Port Douglas and Daintree (TPDD).

‘‘TPDD work very closely with the Carnivale committee and their help is invaluable in helping to promote Carnivale. With their support, we have a national, regional and local media campaign covering television, radio, print and online,’’ he said.

As well as the national activity, the Carnivale campaign will also extend to regional areas of north Queensland, with a mix of newspapers, online advertising and lifestyle publications. ‘‘We are marketing in Townsville and Mackay as well as closer to home in Cairns. In the lead up to the festival we will add TV, radio and newspaper into the media campaign,’’ he added.

Mr Weavers urged operators participating in Carnivale to support the event with their own marketing. There is a brand suite available and those interested should email roy@carnivale.com.au.
