Pieces all fit for the DAB Mosaics artists
TEACHING how to create mosaics is second-nature for Douglas Arts Base tutor Sam Matthews, who is also busy planning an artistic show for Carnivale’s Beach Day.
Every Saturday afternoon beginners and advanced mosaic artists gather at DAB in Mossman under the guidance of Ms Matthews, who is happy to teach the basics of creating an intricate mosaic piece.
‘‘I teach from the real basics of how to glue, cut, break, how to make pictures and mosaic different surfaces depending on whether it’s for outside or inside, in a wet area or in the sun,’’ she said.
‘‘We have complete beginners to people doing it for a couple years now and they keep surprising me, inspiring me actually – over the Christmas break a few of them did heaps of mosaics and showed me, it was some pretty amazing stuff they brought in.
‘‘People should come along. It’s a social outing, you learn something new and you can start anytime, I can come on a casual basis and I go to DAB every Saturday afternoon from 1.30pm to 4.30pm. Whoever shows up, I have something for them to do.’’
When she is not teaching, Ms Matthews is busy planning her Carnivale art show, after being invited by the organiser of the Beach Day, Tim Ellis.
‘‘I’m going to be doing opinion polls, it’s a way of involving as many different people as possible,’’ she said.
‘‘There will be a flash mob where everyone turns up on Carnivale Beach Day at a set time and in a marked area they can put in their poles, so it’ll be a mass planting of artwork, like a pop-up art show.
‘‘Poles can be decorated with anything – they could be carved, mosaicked, have fabrics on them and be flag poles – as long as it’s tall and not too wide. It can be your opinion, anything you want to share, deep and meaningful or all about colour – we will have poles from artists through to school kids to get a real cross section of the community.’’
Everyone is encouraged to get involved and for more information on the art project email Sam Matthews on firstname.lastname@example.org or pop in to DAB on Mill St, Mossman Saturday afternoons.
