Quickies’ boats revamped
PORT Douglas-based reef tour operator Quicksilver Group is spending more than $1 million on the refurbishment of vessels Quicksilver V and Ocean Spirit.
At 39 metres in length, Quicksilver V will be high and dry at the Cairns Slipways for two months undergoing her annual mechanical service and a major internal refit.
This will include a total new servery and bar area, internal stairway, new seat coverings and even the toilets are getting a makeover as they modernise the vessel with contemporary colours and furnishings.
Ocean Spirit, the 32 metre sailing catamaran, will also be on the slips for three weeks to redesign a new servery and bar area to enhance the main cabin. This follows on from three weeks in December when the top deck was replaced with new flooring and fittings. Having only purchased Ocean Spirit six months ago, the group has now invested almost $200,000 in her rebirth as a premier sailing vessel. This has included new sails.
Tony Baker, Quicksilver Group managing director, said ‘‘While all our vessels are refitted each year, this year we will see major work carried out on our fleet and platforms. The 2014 year will start with two of our vessels at the shipyards for an extended period while we make sure our investment in our fleet highlights our commitment to the tourism industry. A little later in the year we will also be looking to bring two of our Outer Reef activity platforms from Moore Reef and Agincourt Reef back to Cairns for major refurbishment works. Although the past few years have been tough we recognise the need to reinvest and keep our products to the standard of a five star reef operator."
