Women of the world unite

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - THE GROOVE - Angelique Patterson

WHO runs the world? Women!

On March 8 the world celebrates International Women’s Day to recognise and applaud women’s achievements as well as highlighting gender inequalities and issues.

For the past 16 years the Port Douglas Community Services Network Incorporated ( PDCSN) has showcased local women’s achievements by holding an annual International Women’s Day Luncheon featuring guest speakers and entertainers.

Organiser Sheila Pitman said this year they have two guest speakers who will talk about their lives and ‘‘amazing accomplishments’’.

‘‘One is an author who has written popular books about the local area and the other speaker is an indigenous educator who will be sharing her story,’’ Ms Pitman said.

‘‘We also have a mystery entertainer who is sure to amaze you with her stunning performance.

‘‘We have some wonderful raffle prizes including accommodation, spa treatments, jewellery, gorgeous leather handbags and gift vouchers just to name a few, from the generosity of local businesses, some of whom have supported us every year for the last seven years’’

The International Women’s Day (IWD) luncheon is one of PDCSN’s major fundraisers, the raffle will be drawn on the day and proceeds go to the Port Douglas Neighbourhood Centre.

Ms Pitman said people should come along to not only support the Neighbourhood Centre, which provides crucial services for the community, but to celebrate everything ‘‘womanly’’.

‘‘It’s a chance for the girls to catch up and chat without their partners,’’ she said.

‘‘And also a time to recognise and celebrate our local quiet achievers, the local women who have made a difference, who have quietly achieved, in the home, in the work- place, sporting arena, in arts and cultural pursuits in our community.

‘‘International Women’s Day is remembering the battle long fought in society to bring equality between women and men and the luncheon is a chance for the ladies to support women’s rights and also support the Neighbourhood Centre.’’

So ladies, get your friends together, book a table and join PDCSN on Friday, March 7, at Salsa Bar & Grill for fabulous food. The wine will flow freely along with the conversation.

Tickets are $60 per person, available from the Neighbourhood Centre. Phone 4099 5518 for details
