NAME: Alicia ‘‘Ace-Sassin’’ Rowe CLUB: Douglas Derby Divas

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - SPORT -

Why roller derby? I always loved roller skating as a kid and was looking for a team sport to play. Roller Derby looked like it would be fun. Do you have to have skating experience to join a roller derby team? No, anyone can play as long as you can have a laugh and not take yourself too seriously. What is the best thing about derby? Being part of an awesome team of women and having fun whilst keeping fit and the feeling of being a kid again on 8 wheels. What is the worst thing? When you have a big stack and the amount of squats we have to do at training. What does a standard training session entail? Skating drills, and lots of core fitness exercises, learning to stop quickly and working on your speed. Oh and we are also learning the rules. What are your team members like? AWESOME! Fun loving, outgoing, energetic and full of ratbags! Tell us a little about your alter-ego Ace-Sassin? Ace-Sassin is my naughty side. She is very cheeky and a little bit rough around the edges and very boisterous. Most embarrassing moment on the track? None yet but I’m sure there is plenty to come. Watch this space. Favourite team mate? There are no favourites in our team - everyone is awesome! What’s the team like? A bit like my alter-ego with some added mischievousness. Why should women consider taking up derby with the Divas? It is the fastest growing women’s sport in the world and extremely liberating to play. ‘‘Why not?’’ should be the question! How long until you think the Divas will be competing? Hopefully we will be bouting within 6 months but we have lots to learn ad also all need to pass our minimum requirements before we can bout but when we do look out, as we will be fierce.
