Sharkies set

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - SPORT -

SATURDAY night saw the Mossman Port Douglas Senior Sharks brave the weather to take on the Yarabah Seagulls for their final trial match of the 2014 pre-season.

With high hopes for the trials the Sharks did not disappoint those faithful supporters who turned up preparing to yield any sort of cover necessary to find shelter from the bucketing rain. Thankfully the weather cleared up and the grounds dried out and our faithful supporters didn’t risk catching a cold.

The first game kicked off with the under 18’s focusing on ball control and determination to run away with a 40 points to 6 win. Under the coaching guidance of our president Jason Fasano combining with Billy Segeyaro the youngest of our teams are training hard and hoping to see a few more Under 18 players join them for a promising 2014 campaign.

Next up was the Mossman Central Tyre Service Reserve Grade added the Sharks only loss of the night. Beaten by 14 points the Reserves put in a promising performance giving the boys plenty of points to improve on and good signs for the season ahead.

With a mixed result from the two proceeding games the boys were determined to turn the night around and achieve an undefeated preseason for the Mossman Custom Kitchen’s A Grade Sharks. Our Captain/ Coach David Grainer not only managed to provide the boys with direction and purpose he was rewarded with a try for his efforts. Upfront David Oui provided some brilliant metres and go-forward laying the perfect platform for the backs to play on. Working on this Darryl Grant steered the boys well at 5/8 having a hand in most tries scored for the game with a particularly impressive combination in putting Darryl Lightening over the line for four points.

Coinciding with the trial match the cooperative C- Grade Mossman/ Mt Garnett Sharks travelled to Cairns to play against last year’s minor premiers Malanda. Putting on an impressive show the boys ran away with the win tallying a final score of 42 to 18.

Mossman Port Douglas Senior Sharks would like to thank anyone who attended either trial match this season and look forward to a great season ahead. The Sharks now prepare to travel to Innisfail to play their first match of the CDRL season before heading back to Mossman to play Mareeba for the first home game of the season on March 15.
