In 2004, we lost one of the greatest athletes Australia had ever seen. Shirley Strickland de la Hunty was possibly awarded more Olympic medals than any other Australian in running sports. Shirley competed in the 1948 London Olympics, the 1952 Helsinki Olympics and the 1956 Melbourne Olympic games. Shirley won three gold medals, one silver and three bronze medals in her Olympic career. And medals galore at the 1950 Auckland British Empire Games (equivalent to the Commonwealth Games), snagging herself three gold and two silvers. Shirley passed away in February 2004 and was honoured with a state funeral.
