Coastguard’s call out

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS - Shane Nichols

MOST organisations don’t want to be known as a Dad’s Army, but the Port Douglas Coastguard wants more of this demographic to offer their services.

The call is going out – if you have a lot of time on your hands, please offer it to the Coastguard, who need people to be available either for call outs as crew on a mission, or simply to man the radio, if that’s what you’d like to do.

“We’ve noticed in the past two years we’re getting younger men wanting to join, which is terrific, however what we notice is when we have emergencies we have difficulty getting them to have time off work,” said Port Douglas commander Juergen Starck.

“We also have our radio room, which is state of the art, totally fitted out with equipment, and we are a little bit envious of what Cairns does, which is to man the radio all day, seven days a week.

“What they have is people who have ended or semiended their working life, which gives them something to do and a feeling of assisting or giving back to the community, and I thought it’s something we should look at as well.

“Having the radio here, not manned, really hurts me. We have a very high quality set up,”Mr Starck said. “So we are appealing to these people who may have a lot of time to serve in a number of capacities.

“One is assisting us in emergences – we would train them to the level that is required [Competent Crew level], and for that only need people who are able bodied. They don’t need to be mariners or yachties, but to put to sea they need to be able to move freely on a moving boat.

“Then, of course, there are people who may not be fit enough to go to sea but they can still do plenty of things around the base here, such as work in the radio room.

“We can train them to be operators. We could run this on a 3 or 4 hour shift so people don’t have to be here all day.”

He said there are also others such as tradespeople who can help maintain the base.

Anyone who is interested in helping the Coastguard please phone 4099 5392.
