The showers flush out a toad horde

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS -

HORDES of cane toads have been flushed out of their regular hidey holes by 22mm of rain that burst over Cairns earlier this week.

Frog Safe Inc founder and president Deborah Pergolotti said the invasive animals had remained semi-buried under leaf litter and other hiding spaces during the dry season.

“With that sudden bout of rain in one particular spot, it’s basically inundated all the little toads’ hidey holes,’’ she said.

“It will drive them out and they will start moving around during the day.”

Ms Pergolotti her organisation needed a property close to rainforest, with a permanent creek or dam, ideally within the Douglas or Tableland shires, for its planned frog hospital and a small visitors’ centre.
