Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - LOOKING BACK -

Excruciating pain for 6 days and swollen extensive corneal abrasions to both eyes with heaped epithelium which was scraped off at Cairns Base Hospital after being cared for at Mossman Hospital is the result from wearing fun coloured contacts bought off eBay! My daughter, a typical gorgeous young person, who is so full of energy and would do anything for anyone thought ‘how much fun to look so awesome for Halloween.’ Sophie bought them off eBay for $25. I, like many, thought they looked awesome! She wore them for three hours on Saturday night. A few days later (Tuesday) she decided to wear the contacts all day. Soph said her eyes were blurry wearing the contacts after a few hours but assumed that afternoon when she took them out, her vision would clear. In our busy household, I said ‘what do the instructions say?’ This is when we realised that there weren’t any instructions regarding how long and how many times you can wear them. I assumed with a goodnight sleep her eyes would be fine! Sophie went to school Wednesday morning and by midday she was in Mossman Emergency. Within hours she couldn’t open her eyes due to the pain and light sensitivity.

Over the next 3 days, she was not getting any better which left us a family devastated and so confused on how this could happen.

The ophthalmologist assured us in Cairns Hospital on Friday afternoon that once he scraped her eyes, Soph would only be in pain for a few more days then slowly she would be able to open her eyes.

At first he warned it would be blurry for a while, but her corneas would heal! Seeing my normally bubbly daughter not talk for 5 days and in so much agony, only able to open her eyes to put in her antibiotic drops while crying in pain should not have happened!

I decided to take a photograph before the pain relief wore off of the dye that was put in her eyes, which shows the damage caused by using those contacts, so I could warn other victims only to wear contacts from reputable places.

I put this picture up Friday night on Facebook and it has been shared 30,000 times so far. I’ve had people all over the world message me with similar stories. I think what makes me devastated is, I had no idea there were consequences on wearing unprescribed contacts!

Now you know!

Thank heaven all the noise about the need for repairs to the boat ramp at Rocky Point seem to be getting somewhere.

Now the north westerlies are starting to blow regularly and that is exactly what worried some of us the most about the
