Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - THE GROOVE -

I am receiving very positive feedback about the Business Forum hosted by Douglas Shire Council last week.

With great speakers sharing inspiring experiences and advice to those in attendance, and the fantastic networking opportunities presented to our business community, the forum has provided a solid platform from which to launch a revitalised effort in growing and sustaining the Douglas economy .

It is now important that the expectations created by the forum are advanced and built upon.

I am, therefore, very pleased to have successfully instigated inclusion of an Economic Development (Sustainability) Strategy in the Council’s 2015/16 Operational Plan. This strategy, which is to be completed this financial year, will identify a long term vision for our economy and provide a road map for securing a sustainable and vibrant economic future for Douglas.

By necessity the Economic Development (Sustainability) Strategy will require input from, and consultation with, the Douglas business sector and more broadly the community at large. There is a very real opportunity now to get us all working towards a commonly understood and accepted longer term vision for our economy underpinned by a series of agreed strategies targeting clearly identified and achievable outcomes.

We all have a stake in the well being of our local economy. I encourage everyone to get involved in the development of our Economic Development (Sustainability) Strategy in the coming months.

David Carey, councillor, Douglas Shire
