Muddies win outright

Move to top spot after Toads two-day contest

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - SPORT -

MUDDIES b grade win outright and claim top spot,

With a stinking hot day at the Mudpit and the Toads’ overnight score of 5/36 it was always going to be a tough day for both sides in the B grade clash last Sunday.

The Astute Financial Mudcrabs were well and truly in the box seat for an outright victory but they had their work cut out for them.

Captain Bobby and young Kaiden J Sorensen started they day’s proceedings, bowling some great line and length. The Astute Financial Mud Crabs B team defeated the Toads on Sunday in the second part of the two-day clash. It puts the Muddies at the top of the ladder.

Kaiden was the first to strike, bowling an absolute peach to clean up the Toads batsman, making it Toads 6/60. The heat (maybe) had overcome captain Bobby pretty early on and he looked to the ever reliable good bloke Mr Redfern to take over.

With Redfern bowling his ever so tight lines he was pretty unlucky with 2 pretty simple catches being dropped in the outfield. After some words of wisdom from Benny V, Redfern popped one a bit wider to the batsman who found the edge, guiding the ball straight to the safe hands of Nathan King – Toads 7/85.

Benny V came on to take over from Kaiden and produced the goods pretty much straight away.

Benny claimed two quick ones and Redfern got another, seeing the Toads all out for 94 and a lead of 46.

Bowling figures: Captain Bobby 3/16 off 9, Deep 1/8 off 4, KJ Sorensen 2/25 off 14, The Good Guy Redfern 2/34 off 13 and Baby Face Benny V 2/7 off 3.3.

With just 47 to chase down for the outright win, things didn’t start off as planned, with Randal unwell. Dan Harris and Benny V opened the batting. Three overs in, Harris lost his wicket, caught for just 3 runs. Muddies 1 for 4.

The in-form Nathan King came to the crease and he and Benny started to take to the Toads bowlers.

It wasn’t long before they had put on a 45-run partnership, with Benny V 28 not out and King thirteen not out, which saw the Astute Financial Muddies claim their first outright win for the year.

It also elevated them to where they belong, on top of the ladder.

With two games left until Christmas the Muddies take on United this week at home and will be looking for another big victory to cement their spot on the top.

Nippers out lads.
