Mud Crab uses long weekend to drop a line in

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - SPORT -

I fish every day, around Cairns a lot and up here. We’re staying up here for a few nights.

I like to fish around structures like this pontoon. That’s where fish like to hide and shelter.

Just a moment ago I had a coral trout on the line, but it got off. I thougt at first it was really big jack, until I saw it at the surface. It was a whopper, about a metre.

My best fish was a yellow fin tuna which I got off Machans Beach about a year ago.

It was late in the afternoon and I had given up and was just reeling the line when it hit. It was just a lucky snag really. It’s all about being in the right place at the right time isn’t it?

It felt like a monster. I reckon it was a metre and weighed about 30 kg.

On the line it felt like I was fighting a motorbike.

It only took about five minutes to get in. You don’t want to be too slow getting them in or they might get off.

I got a friend to fillet it for me and it fed about four of us.
