Newell Beach groyne takes shape

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS -

CONSTRUCTION has been completed of a groyne at Newell Beach to limit erosion and aid the movement of sediment.

Thirty-five geotextile bags filled with sand and formed into five groynes line the beach. “Originally it was anticipated to have six groynes, but due to natural sand movements since the planning stage it was deemed from an engineering perspective that only five groynes were necessary,” said council operations manager Paul Hoye.

Mr Hoye said that when the area stabilised, officers would plant appropriate vegetation in key areas to further combat erosion.
