Memorable monster mackerel

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - SPORT - Shannon Parkes

I was off the coast of Cooktown one evening, about six years ago, and managed to reel in a 55kg Spanish mackerel.

There were about five of us chasing red emperor, but we weren’t having much luck.

All of a sudden my line just took off, and everyone thought it must have been a shark.

Eventually, after struggling for about half an hour, the fish’s head came up – we all nearly fainted when we saw how big it was! It took three of us to haul it into the boat.

I’ll never forget that day, but my favourite fishing spot would have to be around Snapper Island (20km north of Port Douglas) – it’s a beaut place.
