Prime Port site ripe for ma­rina de­vel­op­ment

A PRIS­TINE wa­ter­front site which cov­ers more than an acre in the heart of Port Dou­glas is ex­pected to draw the fancy of prop­erty de­vel­op­ers from around the na­tion. The 4915sq m site, which is si­t­u­ated just a stone’s throw from the Port Dou­glas CBD, has a de­vel­op­ment ap­proval in place for the ma­rina and wa­ter­front in­dus­try. The de­vel­op­ment ap­proval will al­low for all ma­rina and wa­ter- re­lated in­dus­tries such as a jetty, boat stor­age, tourism ven­tures or fish­ing busi­nesses, as well as other op­por­tu­ni­ties for com­mer­cial de­vel­op­ment. CBRE Cairns se­nior sales and leas­ing agent Rob Mac­far­lane said the com­mer­cial prop­erty mar­ket was mov­ing on from a sea­sonal past into a more con­sis­tent pe­riod of trade. “There’s a lot hap­pen­ing in Port Dou­glas with the re­de­vel­op­ment of the ma­rina mi­rage and Macrossan St is just boom­ing with retail,” he said. “It’s re­ally be­com­ing a world­wide desti­na­tion. “The mar­ket can be sea­sonal but I think it’s re­ally push­ing through that now — and the town has the Car­ni­vale event com­ing up, so it’s a good time to be around the town. “It’s close to Cairns and there is a lot of scope and land around for fur­ther de­vel­op­ments like res­i­den­tial, ac­com­mo­da­tion and ho­tels. “Port Dou­glas will go from strength to strength in the fu­ture.” The site also is just a one minute drive from the Reef Ma­rina re­de­vel­op­ment. Mr Mac­far­lane said the Port St site was ideal for tourism or com­mer­cial op­er­a­tions that were look­ing to use the wa­ter­front for their busi­ness ven­tures.

“The site’s size, rel­a­tively flat sur­face and frontage onto the wa­ter make it ideal — it’s a fairly straight­for­ward block to de­velop,” he said. “The zon­ing al­lows for us­age of the wa­ter­front and it would be ab­so­lutely ideal for tourism, com­mer­cial fish­ing or char­ter boat com­pa­nies. “It’s hard to say how much it could be worth at the mo­ment, purely be­cause it will de­pend on the buyer’s needs and plans for the site. That’s why we’ve al­lowed for an ex­pres­sion of in­ter­est pe­riod.” CBRE Cairns is cur­rently seek­ing ex­pres­sions of in­ter­est with a clos­ing date of March 23.
