An oasis of potential

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - FRONT PAGE - Nick Ansell

A PROPERTY surrounded by a natural billabong and hidden away in the suburban streets of Holloways Beach is set to offer a grand opportunity to a budding entrepreneur or homemaker.

Boasting more than five acres (2ha) of land, the Billabong Bed & Barra property currently doubles as a bed and breakfast, as well as a function centre for weddings, parties and other private events.

The wheelchair-friendly four-bedroom property, which also features a two-bedroom villa just metres from the main house, is surrounded by a natural billabong moat that is home to more than 500 barramundi.

Current co-owner Dion Tangey, who is an underground miner by trade, said the decision to part with the property was one of the toughest he had to make. “My business partner’s father is a bit sick down south, so he wants to head down to spend some time with him, and I’ve got the opportunity to head over to Tanzania (East Africa) to do some work,” he said. “For a property such as this, you really need to be here and it doesn’t quite suit my lifestyle at this moment.

“I used to fly over the property when I was flying back into Cairns from mining work and look down at it … I was helping a mate across the road build his front fence, and I looked over and saw the for sale sign.

“I wandered through and thought ‘oh, that’s the property I’ve always flown over’: I just fell in love with it as soon as I walked through the door twoand-a-half-years-ago.”

Mr Tangey said he and his business partner had reclaimed land on the property, installed a retaining wall on the edge of the lawn, and built a specialised outdoor bar on the site, with a backdrop painted by a local artist.

He said the property had “endless” potential, with previous owners pitching ideas including the construction of individual villas around the edge of the billabong.

“You could do legitimately anything with this property if you put your mind to it; it’s really unique and it’s only your imagination that is going to restrict it,” he said. “You could install little cabins with their own little jetties coming on to the water … there are so many things I’ve thought of.

“People really need to come and look through to know how it fits in here and to understand the uniqueness; the bedrooms are a good size and the lounge opens up on to a deck with unbelievable views.”

The Caribbean St property is set to go under the hammer on March 19.
