Reef trout speared in an instant

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - SPORT - SALT WATER Harry Walker

ABOUT one month ago I went with a few mates out to Tongue Reef for a day of spearfishing.

We didn’t have a GPS or anything so we thought we would just try our best.

But pretty soon after we jumped in the water my mate said we should probably try somewhere else because there were so many bluebottles.

Just as I went to get out I turned around and there was a big trout swimming right in front of me.

So I got it pretty much straight away, it was about 66cm which was the biggest trout I had ever caught.

I battered it that night and it tasted awesome with a few chips.

I love spearfishing. It gives you a pretty unique look at all the amazing sights.

I usually go out to the reef with my mates, or whenever the water is flat.

TOP: Bob reeled in a nice large-mouth nannygai at the weekend. RIGHT: Matt Andrews caught and released this huge 1.7m barracuda near Snapper Island on Saturday. BOTTOM: Harry Walker won’t forget this 66cm trout he caught while spearfishing at Tongue Reef.
