The current scare campaign by my opponents is an attempt to discredit our Council’s acknowledged success in financial management.
I want to assure the community that rates will not rise as stated by my opponents, just like they didn’t rise as some predicted following deamalgamation.
Under my leadership, the 3.9 per cent rate rise in 2015 was well below the forecast, and did not compromise the target to to achieve surplus by 2019.
It should be noted that the current financial strategy to return the budget to surplus was unanimously approved by all Councillors in 2014.
This strategy, however, is a forecast position only and regularly revised taking into account actual revenue and actual expenses. As a result, Council reviews and adjusts the rates based on budget requirements at the time.
The good news is that we are already well on track to outperform the 2015 budget. The scare campaign failed before, and I trust it will again.
