Sharks down the Gladiators
Strong win in first pre-season match
THE Mossman-Port Douglas Sharks took on the Mareeba Gladiators in the first pre-season game on Saturday night and came away with convincing 26 to 18 win.
Both sides were keen to see how new players gel with stalwarts during the 20 minute quarters.
Despite a fight back from the host Gadiators in the last half, the Sharks held them out record a victory.
The Sharks coach Billy Segeyaro said the youthful Gladiators team took him by surprise.
“The Mareeba sides have been strong over the recent years,” he said.
“That’s a pretty young side they have; we actually had the same things a few years ago.
“Hopefully they will keep it together and this year it goes well for them.”
Segeyaro said the Sharks were a bit rusty but the game provided them with a chance to get their combinations right.
“We’ve got a lot of players that have only just come in,” he said.
“They’ve gelled in well with the local boys.
“We’ve got another trial yet so we’ll keep building on it before the start of the season.”
Segeyaro attributed his side’s success to the strong relationship the Sharks players have built up over the years.
“We’ve got a lot of boys that have played together over the years in rep sides and a number of players who have played in the CDRL for a number of years,” he said.
“When you get those players together it doesn’t take them that long to gel.”
Ahead of their next trial game, the Sharks will focus on their defence.
“Our attack comes naturally,” he said.
“We’re going to focus on our defence and working around our ruck.”
