Carey sees how little train can connect

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS - Shane Nichols

COUNCIL candidate David Carey wants to see a tourist train line connecting Port Douglas and Mossman, as an economic boost for both towns.

“A lot of families come to Port Douglas,” he told the Gazette. “Everybody loves a train ride.”

He touched on his idea at the election forum in Mossman on Tuesday night in response to a question.

“Given most of the infrastructure is already there it’s just a matter of working out the logistics. And it might be something that only runs during the peak season.

“I reckon people could make a whole day’s trip over to Mossman – visit the Gorge, drift up into town, and that would help the Mossman economy, because businesses there complain tourists don’t stop in.

“That’s what they’re trying to do with the Mossman Botanic Gardens. Maybe there could be a little station in Raintrees.”

Cr Carey said he floated the idea at council a long time ago but “perhaps it was a bit premature” and received little support from other councillors.
