Homelessness, affordable accommodation and crisis housing are the focus for three Community Forums planned for the Douglas and Cook Shires over the next few weeks. A detailed analysis, commissioned by the Douglas Shire Community Services Association and FNQ Partners in Recovery, is being undertaken by local consultant, Ms Judith Shapland titled “More than Just a Roof Over My Head”. The analysis is looking at the options for both communities in relation to accommodation for people who find themselves homeless due to a range of issues including domestic and family violence, substance abuse and financial crises. “As a result of numerous studies, both communities have recognised the enormous need for appropriate, local solutions to the issues of accommodation for families and individuals who find themselves without a safe place to sleep,” Ms Shapland said. “Establishing the need has already been accomplished,” she said, “so now we must look at options currently available and possibilities of creating more places for crisis accommodation.”
