Now time to move ahead
THOUGH at the time of writing there is an agonizing wait for several candidates to see whether they were elected in the council poll, it seems already clear that there is the making of good, workable council just waiting confirmation.
Congratulations to Julia Leu for her commanding win to the mayoralty for a second term.
And congratulations to Roy Zammataro whose first time appearance before the electorate has received such an impressive endorsement from those voters. Abigail Noli also ran away to an unequivocal win
The inaugural council performed a daunting task that called for steadiness and a ton of hard work, just to get the DSC and the shire back on its feet.
I think they did that and all of those who served on that council deserve thanks.
That council had to start from scratch and most of us will never know how hard that was.
They have their critics, for sure, but they delivered the solid start the shire needed.
Now, with a four-year term ahead of the new council, I think it should not just be about consolidation and steady as she goes governance, but a careful weighing of ideas and the pursuit of a unified vision as much as possible.
Let’s make things happen – and the most pressing case is the Reef Marina redevelopment. I realise how complex and vexed this is, but it must be addressed so that Port Douglas, and in fact the whole shire, reaps the benefit of this exciting project.
Altogether on another note, let’s give recognition to two more sporting teams that have covered themselves with glory – the Muddies B and C grade cricket teams, both of which have just completed back-back-back premiership wins. Go Muddies!
Heck, go Douglas!
