COUNTING of votes for the final two seats on the Douglas Shire Council continued this week and as of the Gazette’s deadline last night still involved a nail-baiting wait for three candidates as the Electoral Commission Queensland (ECQ) considered an application for a recount.
The application was received yesterday, after the final tally showed 2286 votes for incumbent David Carey, 2271 votes for Michael Kerr and 2263 votes for Peter McKeown.
With these numbers Carey and Kerr are positioned to take the final two seats, but with a potential recount looming the composition of the Douglas Shire Council is still up in the air.
ECQ Assistant Director Carrick Brough yesterday confirmed that a candidate had filed the formal application.
“This request will be considered by the Electoral Commis- sioner and a decision will be communicated this afternoon or tomorrow morning,” said Brough.
If the request is approved the shire may have to wait until Friday to gain confirmation on the final two coun- cillors. Although they haven’t been officially sworn in Roy Zammataro and Abigail Noli run little risk of losing their seats, all sitting on a comfortable lead.
Julia Leu has been officially returned as mayor.
