Rain puts a jack in the picture

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - SPORT - Graham Keirghran

WE’RE from Townsville and just came up for the Easter break.

Last week I was a flicking a Z man 4.5 inch Z Man grub and landed a 46cm mangrove jack.

That’s because the fresh water was flowing out to the bay off the weir, so it was pushing the bait out to the saltwater and it’s an easy catch for the big fish.

I only fish that spot when it rains. it hadn’t rained in Townsville for a long time, but after this rain I decided to give the weir a go.

There’s a lot of snags in the water there and initially I though I had hooked a snag. I just let a bit of line out and it just started running, and I got it in from there.

I fish the jetty at the Strand a lot, and around Magnetic Island on a boat. The ast side of Maggie Island is my favourite.

Around this time the big grunter are coming in and in a few weeks there’ll be a few GTs and some golden trevally.
