Six Outrigger crew off to world titles
SIX crew members from the Port Douglas Outrigger Club are gearing up compete at the Biannual World Sprint Championship next Week on the Sunshine Coast.
Kevin and Dani Bellero, Lili Jensen, Vernon Carpenter and Mike Shuck will be representing Australia as part of “Team Far North Queensland”.
After being selected into the squad during extensive trails last year they then had to qualify for the event earlier this year.
‘’This is the first time for the five of us to be involved in a campaign like this,” Danielle Bellero said.
“It is very exciting and we have learned so much as paddlers over the last 12 months – experience we now will pass on to the rest of our club.”
Intensive training in Cairns and monthly training camps at Lake Tinaroo have come to an end as the first race looms.
With the rest of their respective crews coming from the two Cairns Clubs Hekili and Cairns Beaches, training sessions were held in both locations.
The crews will be racing over 500, 1000 and 1500 metres in six-man canoes (OC6) as well as 500 metres in a 12man (OC12).
Official training will start today with the first race on Sunday, May 8. The competition will conclude on Sunday, May 15.
The group will be joined by club member Ingrid Juchem who, for the second time, will be representing Germany in a V1 (single Outrigger Canoe without a rudder).
Two former club members and Port Douglas residents, Bill and Cecily Ridderhof, are also part of the Australian team now racing for Team Noosa.
