Fishing club set to try its luck

KEEN fishos in Port Douglas will have a new place to call home when the Combined Clubs launches its fishing club.

Club manager Kym Rowley is calling for interested people to come to the club on Tuesday, May 17, at 7pm to help inaugurate the fishing club and set up a club committee.

“It’s something I’ve wanted to for a while,” Mr Rowley said.

“There’s a lot of enthusiastic fishermen and this is the opportunity to come together for a general cause, to socialise, to fish, to be competitive – all those things.”

“Basically the Combined Club is a sporting club. What we’re trying to do is get back to its roots, to establish sporting clubs within the club,” Mr Rowley said. “This is just the first one. “I’ve done some deals locally. The next one is a golf club. It’s the social aspect of fishing or golf – we’re starting to establishing community sporting clubs within the Combined Club.”

He said the first step was to establish a committee, which would write a constitution setting out the fishing club’s aims, and begin work on a fishing calendar.

“We’ve organised three or four trips away this year alone, and the first one available to the fishing club will be Endeavour River Escapes, on the long weekend in August, plus monthly competitions.”
