Tennis club lauds juniors
Trewick and Jansen the new champs
LAST weekend saw two new division 1 champions, Levi Trewick and Cassia Jansen, emerge from the Port Douglas Tennis Club Junior Club Championships.
Cassia was undefeated in the Girls singles event. Anna Harding, just only 9 years old, became the youngest ever runner up in this event.
Fleur Prins came close to beating Cassia with two very tight tie-breakers. Cassia and Fleur won the doubles title over Anna and Emma Hudson.
“Levi Trewick and Daniel Plumbe final was a classic,” commented club president Alan Lane of the finals Div- ision 1 boys.
“Levi had four match points in the second set .... but no, Daniel would not go away, and forced the match into the third set. Daniel led early, but then Levi made his comeback to take the title. This was the last match of the day and what a climax.
Daniel was so very good .... almost won the title”.
Rory Spanton, also 9 years old, made it into the semi-finals, but was defeated by Levi. Levi and Daniel won the doubles finals against Rory and Nash Thompson.
The consolation round was won by Nash and runner-up became Jason So.
Quentin Nutt played an amazing weekend.
He won the Division 2 title and is ready for Div 1.
Runner-up became Connor McNeil. Olivia Dollard showed great potential with wins over Quentin and Jai Stapleton.
Jai became undefeated Div3 Champion. Hamish Batterham was very close to take the title. Hamish took the first set against Jai.
However Jai could handle the pressure better and took the second set and could close out in the third super tiebreaker 10-6. Great tennis on a great weekend.
Next event at the Port Douglas Tennis Club is the Carnivale mixed doubles Cup, Saturday, May 21, at 1pm.
