Weipa Port in focus for US military
A large, combined contingent of US and Australian defence officials visited Weipa early this month.
Their visit had been expected for some time, and initially there was speculation that it was about the rarely used but highly strategic Scherger air base.
But according to a Weipa Town Authority spokesman, the delegation was more interested in the port of Weipa.
The contingent was led by RAAF Air Vice Marshall Warren McDonald and Major General Lawrence Martin, who is Assistant Deputy, International Affairs, Office of the Under Secretary of the Air Force, Washington, DC.
According to his CV, Major General Martin’s specialty is liaison with US allies and integration with US defence posture.
