Golden trevally make for golden days

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - SPORT -

THE best fish I’ve ever caught was when I was nine years old and I was out fishing with a mate and his dad in a 5-plus metre reef boat.

I was using a handline as I didn’t know how to use a rod at that time because I had just gotten into fishing.

It was about 9 am. We were using mullet as bait and we had just dropped it down to the bottom.

After about five minutes I got a good bite. I pulled it in and it was a coral trout.

I was so relieved to get it in to the boat, because it was just my second fish and they’re such good eating. Close to 50 cm and it was really fat.

There were a few of us on the boat and after that it was just more coral trout all day, it was amazing, but none were as big as that first one.

They showed me how to clean that coral trout and we put it into this sauce that they had and we cooked it on a barbecue on the boat. It was delicious.

A great day.
