The records tumble at interschool athletics
THE weather was superb, the display of sportsmanship from all students was outstanding, tremendous athleticism was shown, records were broken and all the students, staff and spectators had a great day at the Douglas District Interschool Athletics Carnival at the High School on Friday.
Students from all the schools around the region including Port Douglas, Mossman, Miallo, Wonga Beach, Julatten, Daintree, Alexandra Bay, St Augustine’s and Mossman State High School gathered at the high school to battle it out in a range of events including 100m and 200m sprints, shot put, high jump, long jump and 800m.
Alexandra Bay came away winners in the overall Average Track and Field trophy followed closely by Mossman State School. Mossman State School also won the Aggregate Track and Field (no relays) trophy and the MSPS Ladies Auxiliary Trophy (with relays). It was a day for records to be broken with four records smashed and one record being equalled. These included:
Tyson Crees – 10 year old boys 200m sprint – previous record 29.48s – new record 27.22s ; Jamaica Seare – 12 year old girls High Jump – previous record 1.24m – new record 1.28m; Reagan Crees – 12 year old boys 200m sprint – previous record 27.98s – new record 25.47s; Reagan Crees – 12 year old boys Long Jump – previous record 4.95m – new record 5.02m; Beryl Gibson – 11 year old girls 200m Sprint – equalled the record of 29.47s.
Individual efforts were awarded with the age championship trophies announced at the end of the day: 10 year old girls age champion – Lahni Hawking (Wonga Beach State School); 10 year old boys age champion – Tyson Crees (Mossman State School); 11 year old girls age champion – Beryl Gibson (Mossman State School); 11 year old boys age champion – David Neller (Wonga Beach State School); 12 year old girls age champion – Shakara Gore (Mossman State High School); 12 year old boys age champion – Reagan Crees (Mossman State ).
Some students have now been selected to represent our district at the Peninsula Athletics Carnival being held in Cairns on Sunday and Monday August 14-15.
