Council backs pump track for Port Douglas

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - NEWS - Scott Tibballs

COUNCILLORS voted to approve a $100,000 grant application to the Get Playing Places and Spaces Fund for the construction of a pump track as part of a ‘Family Skills Park’ at the Port Douglas Sports Complex.

A pump track is a loop of mounds ideal for bike riders to maintain speed.

The project was originally proposed by the Douglas Integrated Riders and Trail-Builders (DIRT) Club, and was adopted by the council as a way to provide more sports facilities for both young people and adults in Port Douglas.

Two options were considered – the DIRT Club’s original proposal for a dirt track, and an asphalt track.

In a report to council an asphalt track was identified as cheaper to maintain over many years despite costing more initially.
