Sharks Seniors’ clean sweep number three

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - SPORT -

THE Mossman Port Douglas Senior Sharks had a clean sweep for the third week in a row on Friday night with wins over the Atherton Roosters in the Reserves and A grade.

Last week they beat Southern Suburbs in all grades and the week before that were winners in all three grades against Kangaroos.

On Friday night, the A grade Sharks defeated Atherton 34-28.

Up until Friday night the Atherton Roosters, who sit fourth on the table, had won seven games straight, but they were out-classed by the fifth place Mossman Sharks who raced to a 22-nil lead in the first 15 minutes of the match.

Atherton fought back in the second half to come within a converted try of Mossman, but the Sharks’ scrambling defence off their try line when under pressure held firm in the dying minutes earning them a much deserved win.

But it is not just their solid defence that has been winning them games: the Sharks have scored 130 points in the last three games.

It was hard to pick a standout player as all 17 boys contributed to the win against Atherton.

This Saturday night they face ladder-leaders Innisfail and with the Sharks’ recent form and a home-ground advantage coach James Doolah said his side is going into this match full of confidence.

A win against Innisfail could see the Sharks seal a spot in the top five and play finals football for the first time in a few years, so they are expecting a large and vocal crowd to cheer the boys on.

The Reserve grade, under the guidance of coach Mark Dau, have found some form of late and are still a chance to make the top five.

The C-grade side, who are coached by Garry Mckay, are holding top spot on the ladder and the way they have been playing look certain to retain that position going into the finals.

As Innisfail do not have a C grade side the first game this Saturday, August 13, will be the reserves at 4.30pm followed by a Mossman Junior Sharks game at 6pm which will be a curtain-raiser to the main game which kicks off at 6.30pm. Come and support the mighty Sharks.
