New Mowbray fishing platform on the way for next year
FISHERS and croc spotters missing their favourite perch have something to look forward to - Douglas Shire Council is carrying out preliminary investigations into a proposed fishing platform to be built on the site of the Old Mowbray Bridge.
Infrastructure manager Michael Kriedemann said public consultation would be a part of the process.
“Our aim is to seek community feedback on the project, including potential designs, before the end of this year.
“We will then seek to incorporate the relevant feedback into the final design and begin construction in 2017.”
The Douglas Shire Council has allocated $100,000 in funding towards the construction of a new platform at the popular fishing site in their 2016/17 budget.
The closing of the old bridge south of Port Douglas in February this year drew outrage from the community.
The sudden closure by the council was carried out after an engineer’s report on the old bridge’s condition deemed it to be too unsafe and at risk of “catastrophic failure”.
