HEALTH of­fi­cials are ramp­ing up sex­ual health aware­ness cam­paigns fol­low­ing a large spike in syphilis cases in the Far North. The lat­est health fig­ure data for the Cairns and Hin­ter­land Hospi­tal and Health Ser­vice shows there has been 113 in­fec­tious syphilis no­ti­fi­ca­tions in the re­gion since the start of the year, com­pared to 101 cases dur­ing the whole of 2015. In 2014, there were only 36 cases. The rise in the dis­ease was be­ing seen in two main groups: young Abo­rig­i­nal and/or Tor­res Strait Is­lan­der peo­ple, and gay men.
