Former Cook MP returns to spotlight as referee

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - SPORT -

FORMER Far North politician Jason O’Brien is no stranger to high-pressure situations. The 46-year-old, who served as the ALP’s Member for Cook from 2004-12, is preparing to referee his first FNQ Rugby Premier Grade decider.

O’Brien, who now teaches English and history and Smithfield State High School, will oversee the blockbuster clash between JCU Mariners and Barron Trinity Bulls at Barlow Park on Saturday.

“Getting the big one is every referee’s dream,” he said.

While admitting he felt the heat ahead of political elections, O’Brien said he didn’t get nervous about rugby games.
