Protecting children everybody’s business
IF you visit the Douglas Shire offices in Mossman this week, you won’t miss the message that ‘protecting children is everybody’s business.’
The foyer is decked out as part of Child Protection Week with artwork created by kids from the Mossman Youth Centre.
Youth development co-ordinator Sara Harris said the art was a way for children to “project their interpretation – through art or words – what child protection means to them.”
Working with the help of volunteer Roberto O’Gorman, the kids created everything on show including the centrepiece display.
“(Roberto’s) presence in the Youth Centre is a huge asset to the youths, Mossman Youth Services, community and our organisation Mossman Support Services,” said Ms Harris.
Chairman of the Mossman Support Services Kerrie Jamieson said that the Child Protection Week was a good fantastic opportunity to teach the community and children about dealing with abuse and neglect.
“Highlighting it to the kids gives them the confidence to know that people are ready to listen to and support them,” she said.
As part of Child Protection Week there will be lazertag for kids at the Mossman Showgrounds this Saturday.
