I will never forget that first fish
MY best fish ever was the first one I caught.
I was about seven years old and I went fishing with my grandfather. It was sort of a family tradition.
I grew up in Parma, near Milan, and we were fishing in one of the rivers that runs into the River Po.
The fish come from the sea up into this freshwater river.
We were on the bank of this small river, in the northern summer, in May. It was a Sunday. It was fish breeding time in that river and they were feeding a lot.
The fish I caught was an Alosa fallax – we call it cheppia – and about 30 cm. It was the biggest fish I had ever seen. I caught it with a little silver lure, spinning. It was easy.
When I have time I always go fishing in the rivers and lakes back in Italy. I’m busy with study and sport but if I have a couple of hours I go fishing.
