World Cas­sowary Day

BEAU­TI­FUL weather and lo­ca­tion at JCU’s re­mark­able Dain­tree Rain­for­est Ob­ser­va­tory in­sured the day was well sup­ported and en­joyed by 1000 peo­ple. Ex­hibitors from a range of NGO, com­mu­nity con­ser­va­tion groups and gov­ern­ment de­part­ments par­tic­i­pated and net­worked. Threat­ened Species Com­mis­sioner Gre­gory An­drews de­tailed the Fed­eral Gov­ern­ment’s aims and strate­gies to aid the re­cov­ery of threat­ened species, par­tic­u­larly the cas­sowary. A range of pre­sen­ta­tions were held in the con­fer­ence hall high­light­ing the great work of cas­sowary re­searchers. Writer Bill Wilkie spoke about the Dain­tree Block­ade. His book about the his­toric Block­ade is due out in the next few months. As well as giv­ing a brief his­tory of the Block­ade, Bill read some sec­tions of his book.
