Rainforest thrillseekers, this is for you

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - BUSINESS - Scott Tibballs

VISITORS to Cape Tribulation now have the option of cruising around the rainforest on electric mountain bikes thanks to start up business Freeride Electric Adventure Tours.

Jordan Rogers started the business as a way to open up more of the rainforest to visitors. “What really drove me to get the business going was that market where I knew that people weren’t getting to see as much as they wanted to, and I knew there were properties in the area that had that stuff to offer that weren’t being used,” he said.

With five seasons worth of experience working at Jungle Surfing at Cape Tribulation, and 10 years in the tourism industry, Mr Rogers said he could see the perfect opportunity to offer an experience somewhere between a boardwalk or a guided tour and a full-on six hour hike up Mount Sorrow.

The electric mountain bikes make easy work of what could otherwise be an exhausting peddle around a 6km track behind Mason’s Cafe, depending on your relationship with bikes.

The bikes are the same as any other mountain bike – they just have the added bonus of increasing your effort by up to 300 per cent.

If you’re a bike rider the learning curve is gentle – all you have to do is get used to the amount of power the bikes put out with each peddle.

The guided tour takes riders through regrowth rainforest and up into old-growth rainforest in the hills behind the popular Masons Cafe, where the ride is based.

The large property owned by the Mason family is home to plenty of wild animals for visitors to see and learn about.

Freeride Electric Adventure Tours is based at Mason’s Cafe at Cape Tribulation.

A tour costs $75 per person.
