Under 14s battle it out with top team

Port Douglas & Mossman Gazette - - SPORT -

THE Douglas Muddies Under 14 team have spent the last two Saturdays travelling to Tolga for a top of the table clash against an Atherton side boasting several regional and State representative players and came away with a well-earned draw.

After being sent in on a hard and fast pitch, captain Ryan was unfortunate to be out in the first over without troubling the scorers but the rest of the team all made runs against some fast and accurate bowling.

Charlie led the way with a patient 27 and was well backed up by Bailey, 18, and Jake, 17.

An indication of how fast Beau from Atherton was bowling was when he got an edge from Abel that went in between the keeper and first slip for four without either player attempting a catch.

Atherton took the field full of confidence that was short lived as the boys had them in trouble early.

Only two players in the top nine reached double figures but their captain, Mason, and number 10, Beau, steadied the ship and saw out the first day with a slender five-run lead.

The second day saw the Atherton bowlers ripping in again and the Muddies tail did well to get the score to 150 and a 30-run lead.

Mason and Beau then continued their innings and took the game away from the Muddies with Mason eventually retiring with a chanceless 101 not out and Beau eventually run out for a typical fast bowler’s entertaining 64.

This saw Atherton take first innings points and the second innings reduced to 10 overs each with both sides making 1\80 and the match drawn.

Congratulations also to cocaptain Luke Twomey and Bailey Elliot for making the CFN rep team.
