Meteors smash records to start season
WHILE some sports may be winding down or finished for the year, the FNQ swim season has only just begun.
This year the Meteors Swimming Club will train and compete in only their second season together since reforming only last year as a club.
They also have a new set of members as the swim squad from Tobruk Pool in Cairns join forces with them to compete this season under the ‘Meteors’ banner.
Twenty-three swimmers took to the pool to compete in the TAS Open Qualifying Meet at the TAS Aquatic Centre, Whiterock.
The contingent had eight swimmers compete over the two days: Marlon Bellero (aged 9), Heath Duncan (13), Gus Reynolds (11), Grace Jones (11) Tasmyn Clunie (7) and sisters Sophia (10), Rosa and Sasha (8) Cruz. It was the first competition meet for Grace, Rosa and Sasha and they all swam well, getting times on the board for all events and now having PBs to work on for the rest of the season.
Tasmyn had a smashing carnival achieving three PBs and placing second in the 7 years and Under 25m Freestyle and Backstroke and first in 25m Breaststroke.
Sophia achieved a new PB for the 10 years 50m Freestyle placing fourth and also competed in the 50m Butterfly for the first time this season.
Marlon competed in the 9 years and Under 100m Backstroke and 100m Breaststroke for the first time, gaining new PBs, and placed third in the 50m Free and second in the 50m Fly events.
Heath competed in seven events over the two days, achieving some massive PBs. He smashed 28 secs off his 200m Individual Medley time, 24 secs off his 100m Fly, 10secs off in the 100 Free and 13secs off in the 100m Backstroke – congratulations Heath!
Gus had a great carnival also, shaving some vital seconds off all his PBs and achieving 3rd place in the 11 years 50m Backstroke and fifth in the 50m Breaststroke.
This Saturday (November 5) will see the Meteors compete at the Mareeba Spring Carnival, a one-day action packed event.
